Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel jumps to defend his compatriot Christian Eriksen who has lost his groove as of late.
The 32-year-old is one of the most experienced players in the squad and is considered one of the best playmakers in the Premier League over the past decade, mostly due to his memorable stint at Tottenham.
However, the Dane’s game time decreased following the departure of Erik ten Hag in October. These days, he can be found sitting in the dugout more often than not, as Ruben Amorim prefers to rely on Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park, and even the young Toby Collyer is beginning to climb his up the totem pole at the expense of Eriksen and Casemiro.

Nevertheless, Schmeichel insists Eriksen remains a ‘great’ player, but perhaps his pace is no longer suited to the fast nature of the Premier League.
“Of course, as we know, he is a midfielder. Nowadays in the Premier League, you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes,” said the Euro 92 winner in his interview with Voetbal Primeur.
“The way Ruben Amorim wants to play also doesn’t suit him, he wants to win the ball back quickly. At a very high pace. That’s not in his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.”
Therefore, the iconic goalkeeper invites Eriksen to leave the Premier League altogether. He believes this is the perfect time for the midfielder to make his way back to Ajax.
“He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field… He’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.”
Eriksen’s contract will expire at the end of the season, so he’ll be available on a free transfer.
