Paul Scholes saw a ‘confused’ Ruben Amorim in Manchester United’s latest outing against Leicester City on Friday night.

The Red Devils managed to scrape through the fifth round of the FA Cup thanks to Harry Maguire’s last-ditch header which should have been ruled out for offside but still stood amidst the noticeable absence of VAR.

Nevertheless, fans and pundits alike were hardly impressed with the team’s showing, as many felt that Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men had the upper hand during large spells of the contest.

Moreover, this fixture saw the debut of Man United’s January signing Patrick Dorgu. The Danish wingback signed for the Reds in the final days of the winter transfer session, completing a £30 million move from Serie A minnows Lecce.

But while the 20-year-old’s arrival was supposed to address the club’s weak left flank, Amorim decided to field the left-footed Dorgu on the right lane instead, while the right-footed Diogo Dalot took the left side once more, causing major confusion amongst observers. The new signing only played for 45 minutes before being hooked off for Alejandro Garnacho at the interval.

Hence, Scholes argues that Amorim’s bizarre selections depict a manager who is both ‘fried’ and ‘confused’.

“A big concern for me is that we’ve been crying out for a left wingback. They buy one and it tells me his head is a little bit fried,” said the legendary Man Utd midfielder during his appearance on The Overlap Fan Debate.

“It’s a little bit confused. He plays him at right wingback and keeps Dalot…I feel it’s like a Luke Shaw Jose Mourinho thing, as he kept him on this side (near the touchline) so he could speak to him.”

It will be interesting to see on which flank will Dorgu play in his next outing. The answer should ensue this Sunday when they play Spurs away from home.
